  • Winners are Grinners: St Catherine’s College Awards 2021

2021 was truly an amazing year for St Catherine’s College. Despite some challenges (and COVID-19 hotspots), our residents achieved so much this year. Every year we celebrate those achievements at our Semester 2 Valedictory Dinner, and give out awards to some of the members of our community that went above and beyond this year in academics, sport and citizenship.

    ACADEMIC AWARDS

    COLLEGE AWARDS

Sportsman of the Year– Liam Tubby

We love our sports at St Catherine’s, and we have been so lucky to have Liam on our team. Taking on the role as Male Sports RA, Liam participated in 13 sports over the year, which is a massive achievement! With dedication like that, it’s no wonder we brought home the first place trophies for Mens, Womens and Overall Intercollege Sport this year. Liam will also be taking on the role of Co-President next year.

Sportswoman of the Year- Georgiana Mirams

Our Sportswoman of the Year, Georgiana, has been an absolute star both on and off the field. Competing in nine sports this year while studying for a Bachelor of Biomedical Science is a true achievement. She also took on the voluntary role of Co-Sports Captain this year and did an amazing job of rallying support for our teams and cheering from the sidelines. Sadly, Georgiana is leaving us at the end of the year but we wish her all the best for her next adventure in New Zealand.

Collegian of the Year – Carina Schuetzenberger

Carina came to St Catherine’s from Singapore in 2020 and has been a wonderful part of our community. Taking on the role of Residential Advisor this year, Carina has provided guidance and support to many of our first year residents and worked hard on hosting many College events. Carina is currently training for the Rottenest Channel Swim and will be taking on the role of Co-President in 2022.

Fresher of the Year – Bradley Carter

Whilst having only been at College for a short time, Bradley has made the most out of 2021. Bradley was nominated to be our St Catherine’s Intercollege Fresher Representative for the UWA Residential Students Department, and we have seen Bradley championing us and cheering us on at every opportunity. He’ll be taking on the role of Residential Advisor next year, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll achieve next.

  • 2021 Freshers Hit the Ground Running at O’Week

It’s our favourite time of year again at St Catherine’s College and we’re so lucky to be able to welcome our new residents to our community. As always, the first week at College has been jam packed with events and activities to help everyone get settled into their new home.

    Learning Something New

Every year our new residents participate in workshops that can provide helpful skills for living away from home, establishing a strong, safe community and becoming more culturally aware. Our new residents also had an introduction to the world of entrepreneurship with Bloom, and the exciting opportunities ahead of them this year.

Our new arrivals also perfected their Fresher Dance Routine and performed it on Friday to a crowd of supporters as well as all the other Colleges. Check out the video here ( don’t have your volume up too high, our supporters cheer loudly)!

    Making New Friends

College can be daunting at first, but with so many friendly faces around, our Freshers settled in quickly. The start of the week involved a welcome lunch and a chance to bond with other residents in your wing. Throughout the week there were plenty of chances to meet everyone, with lawn games at Matilda Bay, coffee crawls, and heaps more.

    Having a Blast

O’Week wouldn’t be O’Week without some celebrations! Our new residents put on their finest attire for a Cocktail Garden party on Monday, and got their Glow on for the Back to College Party on Friday.

For Wednesday night shenanigans, gone are the days of Captain Stirling. Our new residents got the chance to meet friends from all along College Row at the new Hampden Hotel.

We have had such an amazing week with all our new residents and we’re so glad to see so many returners back for another great year. While last year had its ups and downs, 2021 is off to a fantastic start.

To kick start the week, new residents had the opportunity to get some tips on life after high school and the transition to university from the Red Frogs and our RA team. In the evening it was time to get all dressed up for an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed Secret Garden Party, complete with giant cards, themed deserts and live music.

    Friday

Friday morning, we donned our St Cat’s colours and marched down to Matilda Bay for the Inter-College Fresher Festival, where we competed in a dance competition against all the other colleges. Our Fresher’s worked so hard to learn the routine throughout the week and it looked amazing! That evening it was time for more dancing as we headed to our boot-scooting Back to College Party. With a DJ blasting country tunes, a bucking bull and some amazing costumes, there was no better way to celebrate an amazing O-Week.
